Joint Replacement

Joint Replacement Surgery

Palm Beach Sports Medicine is dedicated to helping you select the most conservative approach to relieving joint pain, but sometimes a joint is so damaged that joint replacement surgery is your best option.

Even then, we are able to use the most advanced surgical techniques to provide the least trauma to the muscle and tissue surrounding the joint and to speed your recovery.

Total Joint Replacement

of the knee, shoulder, or hip is indicated for those patients with severe, unrelenting pain and functional limitations due to arthritis. This surgery requires a short hospital stay and involves removing the damaged joint and replacing it with a high-tech prosthetic joint that should last a minimum of 15 years. Nearly 300,000 hip replacements and nearly 581,000 knee replacements are performed in the United States each year and the surgeons at Palm Beach Sports Medicine are skilled experts in placing these prostheses.

The day after your surgery, you will be instructed how to carefully begin e

xercising your prosthetic joint to keep scar tissue from forming and impeding your range of motion. Within a few days, you should be able to return home with a physical therapy regimen designed to help speed your recovery and build strength. Your progress will be closely monitored by your surgeon to evaluate your recovery until you are completely healed.

Partial Joint Replacement

is indicated if only one side of a joint has advanced degeneration. It involves replacing only the damaged part of the joint and is a far less invasive surgery that allows for a speedier recovery.

Revision Joint Replacement

has two purposes: to correct a joint replacement, or to replace a prosthetic that has exceeded its usefulness. Revision to correct a previous surgery is not often needed, but when it is, the surgeons at Palm Beach Sports Medicine have the skill to perform it.

Remember that even the most sophisticated prosthetic joint can’t last forever. Modern technologies have given us longer lasting prosthetic joints, but even the best implants can wear out after 15 or 20 years. At Palm Beach Sports Medicine, our surgeons can help you move confidently into the future with the newest surgical revision techniques to provide you with a joint that will last another 15 or 20 years — or longer!
